| Project ABYSS was an experiment that occurred in the late 1940s, in the ending days of what was WWII. Several governments participated in the event, various degrees of enthusiasm debatable with some countries, and it is a response to the Evening of Burning Souls which was the world wide event where magic users were becoming Chaos-type due to trauma and stress of the war along with a more sinister reason. Background of the project is perhaps hard to stomach: It was at first a response to the discovery of the series of experiments that were being conducted on Thaumaturgy-users, from captured students from TIs or POWs, in camps by German scientists. Though the scientists were lambasted for their cruel procedures when they were caught by the Allies, adding a lengthy list of crimes to their already staggering amount of charges to face in court and getting ‘roughed up’ a bit by soldiers when being transferred from place to place, their findings proved to be too valuable for the leaders to simply destroy and forget. Seeing how they made interesting breakthroughs and theories. The experiments were an attempt to see if by conditioning people beforehand will make it easier for them to control their abilities and, by extent, them even after being Corrupted. They were unable to get any further progress beyond Corruption since their test subjects were either young children or malnourished and injured soldiers. With one group not having the expertise or finesse of their abilities and another group too weak or too sick to summon enough strength to use their powers, the scientists who conducted the original batch of trials faced a dead end. The governments did not have to face those issues considering they had fit and able soldiers at their call. The exact extent of the experiments, trials and details are unknown since many documents, tapes and files were destroyed before the release of information in the 1980s and it is believed over 89% of the intelligence is now lost forever. Presumably of course since there are rumors that claim some families and branches of government were able to obtain uncensored copies of the information. Project ABYSS is an often cited unethical and inhumane treatment towards Thaumaturgy-Types and plays a big role in Ariel’s life despite her having no actual connection towards the project. Besides the possibility that one of the participants in the infamous project is roaming her school grounds, that is. | |
